Minnesota Magic – Fun at the State Fair

“Minnesota! It smelled like raspberries and sunlight and tender grass. It was summer, and everything was more beautiful than any picture she carried with her.”-  Ann Patchett

Are we a little crazy for flying across the country just for the Minnesota State Fair? Maybe. Was it worth-it? You bet your bottom dollar.

We went to Minnesota lookin’ for some summer fun at the fair: rides, food, and all kinds of animals. What we got was so much more than that. The land of 10,000 lakes is pure magic, folks. Here’s why:

Our State Fair Highlights:

An August afternoon at the State Fair

Each year, the Minnesota State Fair welcomes two million people.  Crazy, ain’t it? Two million folk stomp the grounds of this State Fair – the second largest in the country! Though, if you’re from Minnesota, you may refer to it as the “Great Minnesota Get Together.” If that doesn’t tell you something about Minnesotans, I don’t know what will.

The Animals

Look here! Award winning cows, folks! Just a snapshot of the rows and rows of cows displayed at the Minnesota State Fair. Imagine an IKEA warehouse…that’s empty…and filled with cows…This was most certainly what it felt like.

Can we tell the difference between these cows and regular cows? Most definitely not. BUT, we can tell you that there’s immense work and pride that goes in to raising cattle in Minnesota. As we walked through the Moo Booth (yes – it is actually called that) we saw families left and right tending to their animal friends and ensuring they were comfortable and well fed throughout the day.

Coming from New York, it’s hard to imagine what growing up on a farm might be like, but one thing is clear:  family is at the heart of it all.

The Eats

Want to know something else? There are nearly 300 food vendors each year at the Minnesota State Fair. 300 food vendors!!! We had a light breakfast and arrived to the Fairgrounds ravenously hungry on the day of the Fair. All in all, we hit up around 8 vendors this time around. Here’s what they were:

  1. Giant Turkey Leg
  2. Corn on the Cob
  3. Bratwurst
  4. Corn Dog
  5. BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich
  6. Chocolate Chip Cookies
  7. Strawberry Smoothie
  8. {Unlimited} Milk
  9. Fresh Root Beer

A few fine pics of us, stuffing our faces with the aforementioned foods:

The Rides:

What’s a State Fair without a couple rides and a couple games? (Lame, that’s for sure).

After stuffing ourselves with root beer and bratwurst all day (and blowing most of our cash on…you guessed it…food) we took it easy on the rides. Nothing too crazy for us this time around: a round of Bumper Cars and spin on the Alpine Bobsled.

Were we the oldest riders on both? You bet.

The Start of a Tradition

Besides our time at the State Fair, we also explored the charming cities of Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Dinkytown. Each revealed a new facet of this wholesome state that we grew to love so suddenly.

Something about Minnesota, the authenticity of its people, the beauty of its wilderness and the freshness of its food has captivated us. In fact, a trip that started as a funny thought ended up becoming our favorite USA trip of the summer. Can you believe it? We’ll catch you next year, Minnesota. Look’s like the State Fair will become one of our yearly traditions!
