“Pizza is not a trend. It’s a way of life.” – Us, probably.
You asked. We delivered. 4 years of NYC pizza taste-testing have amounted to this moment. Our favorite NYC pizza spots, ranked and scored. There are still many more pizza spots for us to get to but for now…check out the leader-board:
7. Di Fara’s Pizza – Brooklyn Born & Bred
Borough: Brooklyn (Midwood)
Why it Rocks: DiFara’s Pizza has been cooking up some mean pies in Brooklyn since 1959. This renowned spot serves up a light and fresh slice with high quality ingredients. $5 a slice, though? Eh…The hype is real.
Pro Tip: Go for the traditional margarita slice (pictured below). It’s a great balance of basil, cheese, and sauce – not super greasy or filling. There are better spots for a square slice in the city, though! Without the trek…
6. Grimaldi’s Pizza – Under the Bridge
Borough: Brooklyn (DUMBO)
Why it Rocks: Grimaldi’s is an iconic, family friendly spot in New York City. They’re known for their coal-brick ovens which keep their pizza crusts light and crisp. This spot has some impressive lineage to Patsy’s Pizza in Harlem – also an OG NYC spot. Gimaldi’s DUMBO location (right under the Brooklyn Bridge) is our absolute favorite!
Pro Tip: Head over on a warm, summer night for a dinner under the Brooklyn Bridge. Then, walk over to the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory (right by the water) for a sweet little treat.
5. Emmett’s Pizza – Chicago Style
Borough: Manhattan (SOHO)
Why it Rocks: Deep dish pizza in New York – but with Chicago quality. And without the -50 degree winds. Our favorite pies are The Classic (Sausage, Green Pepper, Onion) and The Meat Lover (Pepperoni, Sausage, Italian Beef). To our Veggie-Lovin’ friends out there, the Cheese Louise pie is a safe bet for you.
Pro Tip: Though we’re usually all for ordering a large pie, take things slow at Emmett’s. Two slices will knock you out for the night! Oh, and it definitely helps to come as a group! Teamwork makes the dreamwork.
4. Made in NY Pizza – Quality You Can Taste
Borough: Manhattan (Upper West Side)
Why it Rocks: Their slices are cooked to (near) perfection and they’ve got a good tang to their sauce. Some might say that Made in NY Pizza is just a Prince Street Pizza 2.0 – but on the beautiful Upper West Side….Well, Made in NY’s similarity to Prince’s square slice could be grounds for legal action. You heard us. And the jury has a tough decision to make.
Pro Tip: Grab a box with a few square slices (pepperoni, duh) and stroll over to Central Park for a picnic – it’s just a few streets ways!
3. Joe’s Pizza – Grab and Go
Borough: Manhattan & Brooklyn
Why it Rocks: Oh, Joe’s Pizza – where New Yorkers pop in to get a quick pizza fix and are met with cheesy deliciousness. Joe’s Pizza is sold by the slice and is guaranteed to hit the spot on any day. It’s much higher quality than Dollar Pizza, with a little extra glam. They’ve expanded and now have locations all over the city!
Pro Tip: Check out their OG location in Greenwich Village. And grab a glass bottle soda while you’re at it.
2. John’s Pizzeria of Bleecker Street – Oldie & Goodie
Borough: Manhattan (Greenwich)
Why it Rocks: An iconic coal oven spot with a crust that’s got the right amount of crisp to it. A perfect balance of mozzarella, sweet tomato sauce, and dough. Sometimes, it’s all about the little things!
Pro Tip: The line gets long on weekends but the wait is relatively short. Make sure you’ve got your entire party with you and you’ll get bumped up in line!
1. Prince Street Pizza– Pure Fire
Borough: Manhattan (SOHO)
Why it Rocks: Sizzling cheese. Spicy tomato sauce. Crunchy dough. Juicy ‘roni cups. All four of these elements live in glorious harmony atop a Prince Street Pizza slice. Need we say any more?
Pro Tip: Order the pepperoni square. You’ll thank us later.
